Ornamental Planting

Waterlow Park can be described as a gardened park and as such contains many ornamental flower beds looked after by the gardening team and volunteers, the latter set up by Patricia Walby many years ago under the umbrella of the Friends of Waterlow Park.

These are characterised by containing a large proportion of herbaceous perennial plants which provide interest, pollen & nectar for invertebrates from Spring through Autumn.  The beds were mostly replanted as part of the park restoration in 2004/2005 enabled by a Heritage Lottery grant awarded in 1997.

In recent years the ‘watchwords’ for ornamental planting are sustainability, biodiversity & ease of maintenance.  With this in mind some of these beds are in the process of being revamped.

The aim is to have QR codes located in the beds to provide more information and to help visitors to identify the plants.  This will be a work in progress.
