Physick Garden

The Physick Garden is planted in memory of Christine Farrell, a former Acting chair, Co-chair and Deputy Chair of the Friends of Waterlow Park between 2011 and 2017.

Christine was one of the people who worked with Camden to get the Kitchen Garden built in the park.

For many years she worked as a Senior Researcher at The King’s Fund, an independent charity working to improve health, care policy and leadership in England.

With Christine’s interest in public health, the Physick Garden is a fitting memorial.

The Physick Garden is arranged according to the different ‘humours’ of the body to showcase the plants that treat ailments of these areas.

They consist of Thought (Brain, senses, mood, pain, fever), Breath (Lungs, throat, mouth), Feeling (Cardiac, blood disorders, circulation), Nourishment (Stomach, liver, kidney), Touch (Skin).

The areas are divided by woodchip paths so that each section can be differentiated.

A small explanatory plaque is located in the bed and a QR code leads to more information.

Thought has been given to the context of the garden and how it will sit with the adjacent beds as well as harmonising with the beautiful Grade II 17th Century protected brick wall behind the bed.

Consideration has been given to including plants with interest in all seasons and structural shrubs have been included for formality of shape.
